I can follow back the traces of your ancestors depends on different
conditions. In Germany most of the parish registers are starting with
their entries in the early 17th century, only some in the late 16th
century. But other parish registers are only available from the beginning
18th century.</p>

<p>I always endeavor to go back as far as I can. As pointed out much will
depend on the hand-down of the records. Also the distinctiveness of
your ancestors' name can be helpful. Sometimes for occupational, economical
or political reasons families moved about the country or for religious
reasons to another historical territory. If there are no hints in the
parish register then it can be very difficult to follow the trails of
these families.</p>
